To ensure the future of bellringing at St Margaret’s we need to attract and train new ringers. The bells will be easier to ring from the new frame with its new fittings and some of our ringers are now qualified to teach a structured training programme assisted by modern technology.
A computer-simulated ‘silent’ ringing practice system allows the bell ropes to be pulled without producing a noise outside the tower but, by the use of electronic sensors on the bellframe and loudspeakers, the bell sounds can be heard on the ringing gallery. This will help new ringers especially as they build up their skills and confidence.
We have also installed video cameras around the bells with viewing screens on the gallery and in the Heritage Information Area below. This allows ringers and visitors to see the moving bells and hear their sound.
